1) PUBLIC SAYS: "CALM POTRERO TRAFFIC NOW!"
At last Saturday's community meeting on changes coming to Potrero Ave, several dozen local residents spoke forcefully and eloquently about the horrific impacts of freeway style traffic through their neigborhood. Speaker after speaker demanded that the Department of Parking and Traffic put neighborhood safety above 30-60 second estimated auto-driver delays and adhere to their scheduled January implementation of a traffic calming project planned for Potrero that will include bike lanes, center turn lanes, and pedestrian refuges. The community overwhelmingly rejected as inadequate a last minute "alternative" proposed by Muni that would eliminate most of the calming elements of the plan, including bike lanes and a center turn lane in favor of two bus lanes. At the same time there was broad support for Muni improvements in the future, as they are planned and funded, including an eventual plan for real Geary-style Bus Rapid Transit—BRT—on Potrero. A very strong consensus emerged that BRT would be welcome on Potrero, but the traffic calming measures, conceived in response to the death of a 4-year old Buena Vista student, Elizabeth Dominguez last year, could simply not wait another day. 2) BICYCLE FILM FESTIVAL OPENING NIGHT - THURSDAY!
After fun-filled years of sold out shows in New York City the Fourth Annual Bicycle Film Festival (BFF) is coming to San Francisco next week! The Fest will present its selection of thirty passionate, hip and entertaining films from around the world October 7th through 9th at two local venues -- and promises to sell out (so get your advance tickets today!). These films embrace all aspects of bicycle culture by showcasing the lives of cyclists, BMX-ers, messengers, environmental advocates, fanatics, and all bike freaks.
At Opening Night on Thursday, October 7th, the "Mighty" nightclub kicks off the Fest with "Red Light Go" a wild ride into the underground world of bike messenger street racing, otherwise known as Alleycats. Also on for Thursday Oct. 7th is "Stars and Watercarriers" featuring Eddy Merckx in the 1973 Giro D'Italia. This film will be accompanied with a live score by Horizontal Dropout followed by a Party with DJ's both homegrown & imported from NYC. The Fest rounds up on Friday and Saturday at Red Vic with a wide range of films from "Paperboys" - Mike Mills' brilliant documentary, and everybody's favorite "Pee Wee's Big Adventure."
The Bicycle Film Festival is co-sponsored by the SFBC, the Bay Guardian and Puma. It has something for everyone - including several premieres, including coverage of the infamous RNC bicycle protests last month, where 400 bicyclists were arrested. 3) BIKE the BAY BRIDGE: OUR CAMPAIGN GROWS...
Excitement is building about a bike/ pedestrian/ maintenance pathway on the West Span of the Bay Bridge. On Friday, the SFBC sent a formal letter to Mayor Gavin Newsom, Assemblymembers Yee and Leno, and Senator Jackie Speier requesting their support for the project. You may have also read a front page article in the October/ November Tube Times about our efforts. If not, check it out online here: http://www.sfbike.org/?tubetimes
$200 million may seem like a lot of money, but the pathway will truly be an economic boon to the Bay Area when it is built. If we can get regional and state leaders to at least commit $1 million for the environmental review process and then $10 million for the design of the project, we will have generated significant momentum to achieve full non-motorized access on the bridge!

FUN TREASURE ISLAND RIDE THIS SATURDAY

What a great opportunity to see a whole new neighborhood of San Francisco, while promoting a shore-to-shore multi-use pathway on the Bay Bridge! 5) LAST CHANCE TO BE A BUBBLE or BUNNY!
Hey SFBC members, here is your chance to do some silly, suited cycling! The Aeolian Ride gets its inspiration, quite literally, from the wind. Each participant wears a suit that puffs up when they ride, lending to the mass a contour akin to a child’s fairy tale, the softness of cloud rendered critters, or the ethereal quality of a sail caught wind. The ride fosters interaction between the individual and their environment, supports the unmitigated experience of riding a bicycle in an urban area, and invites union of the excitement and playful energy of both riders and spectators.
Co-sponsored by our very own SFBC this event takes place SATURDAY, OCTOBER 9TH at 4pm. 6) SFBC and WALK SF LAUNCH CROSSING GUARD PROGRAM
Drivers continue to routinely violate bicycle and pedestrian right of way at the Masonic crossing of the Panhandle Pathway, but SFBC and Walk SF are teaming up to protect cyclists and pedestrians. We are launching a crossing guard program during evening rush hour to make sure non-motorized traffic makes it across the street safely without being cut off by drivers making a 'free' left turn from Fell onto Masonic. The Department of Parking and Traffic has plans to improve the visibility of the crosswalk and provide a 'head start' for cyclists and pedestrians. However, these measures do not go far enough, and the main turning conflict will still exist even with the changes that are planned. We are requesting that the City implement 'Option C' from the Bike Plan Update which would stop left turning cars with a red left turn arrow while cyclists and pedestrians have a safe, conflict-free phase. WALK (& BIKE!) TO SCHOOL DAY
San Francisco will join in the international celebration of Walk (& Bike!) to School Day this year. This important event has grown to include 28 countries and millions of people each year. Why is it so important? Because, unfortunately, over the past 30 years, the number of children walking to school has declined significantly. The result has been traffic congestion around schools, dangerous streets, and children who are less healthy and less connected to their neighborhoods. We can change that! Walk To School Day is a springboard to organizing for safer streets for kids walking and biking every day.

The weekly Wednesday Volunteer Night is a grand SFBC tradition that goes back for years, with hundreds of people lending a hand to do the things that make our office run smoothly, with an average of 1-2 dozen volunteers each week. We're now shifting gears, and aim to get more done for the bike movement by organizing bigger volunteer night parties twice a month to replace our weekly stuffing extravaganzas. Expect more people getting more done, a little less often. So tonight everyone has the evening off; the Volunteer Night is next Wednesday, a week from today.

Erik van Empel takes us to the annals of the Tour De France: the yellowed magazines, scratched glass plates and damaged film footage that capture the history of the world’s most beautiful race. Featuring legendary cyclists Gino Bartali, Louison Bobet and Jean Robic- the fate of a whole nation was at stake during their heroic 1948 struggle. The few riders of that era who are still alive today describe the unforgiving circumstances in which the battle was decided. The old archival material, the fabulous anecdotes lead to a visually spectacular film that expresses the mythic character of bicycle racing. Take a trip around the Bay Area's best road bike routes in a safe group setting, hosted by the experts at City Cycle. Expect a different ride each Saturday, with plenty of friendly people. This week, look forward to a more inclusive multi-level ride format sorting "hammerheads" and lower intensity riders. Our proposal is to have a more conversational, more humble paced ride depart about 15 minutes ahead of the high heart rate loving riders. We expect both rides to meetup a few miles down the road and perhaps return to SF together. If you are a "Conversational", "Intermediate" or "Advanced" rider that wants to take it easy, you're in Group One; go on the early ride departure. Stop the Piers 27-31 Project From Being Approved at the Port Commission Next Week

Today the Port Commission will vote on whether to approve the Mills Corporation’s shopping mall/office project on the 19-acre site at Piers 27-31 on the Embarcadero. According to independent traffic engineers, the proposed mix of uses will bring thousands of new cars to the already congested Embarcadero, essentially turning it into a parking lot. It will also swamp the already overloaded F-line, and lead to severe conflicts with cyclists on the Embarcadero Promenade and in the bike lanes. The hearing will be held on Tuesday October 12, 2004 at 5:30 p.m. on the second floor of the Ferry Building. Please attend if you are at all able to do so.
